Wiki leaks

“This is the paradox of public space: even if everyone knows an unpleasant fact, saying it in public changes everything. One of the first measures taken by the new Bolshevik government in 1918 was to make public the entire corpus of tsarist secret diplomacy, all the secret agreements, the secret clauses of public agreements etc. There too the target was the entire functioning of the state apparatuses of power.’’

 Slavoj Žižek

Wiki leaks are in news these days. The organisation submits private and secret media and become whistle blowers. This website was launched in 2006 under the banner of sunshine press organisation. This firm claimed the database of more than 1.2 million documents within a year of launch. The director of this organisation is Julian Assange who is an Australia Internet activist. This site was basically launched as user editable wiki but it soon took progresses towards a traditional publication model. Now this site neither accepts comments nor edit by the user. In April 2010, wiki leaks published gun sight footage from 12 July 2007. This footage had Baghdad Airstrike visual where Iraqi civilians and journalist were killed by the use of an Apache Helicopter. In the same year 2010 and same month of July, wiki leaks released Afghan war dairy. November 2010 saw the release of US State Departments secret papers by wiki leaks. However, the creators of wiki leaks are yet to be identified Assange consider himself as the member of wiki leaks advisory board. However, he is regarded as the founder of wiki leaks. On January 2007, the website expressed the server was used as a node for the Tor Network. Million of secret transmission passed through it.

Colbert Report observes Julian Assange observes about freedom of speech, not an ultimate freedom; however free speech is what regulates government and regulates law. That is why in the U.S. constitution the bill of rights says that congress is to make so such law a bridging the freedom of press.

On January 22, 2010 wiki leaks was provided grants of around half a million dollars from John S. and L. Knight Foundation. However, this fund was not received. Wiki leaks commented via twitter, ‘’wiki leaks was highest rated project in the knight challenge, strongly recommended to the board but gets no funding. Go figure.’’ On July 17, Jacob Appelbaum spoke on behalf of wiki leaks at the 2010 Hackers on Planet Earth Conference in New York City. On July 29, Appelbaum was detained for three hours at the airport by US agents, according to anonymous sources. Wiki leaks describes itself as, ‘’ an un-censorable system for untraceable mass document leaking.’’

“You know you have a transparency problem when citizens of a democracy need to rely on Wiki Leaks for details on changes to laws.”
