Communication is the necessity in today’s global world. The recently improved technology in the field of communication includes internet and e-mail facilities. Here, we are going to discuss how these were evolved and developed in the new century? The present age is said to be the age of internet. It is considered in accordance with computer networking. It evolved at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the year 1962. After a research of around seven years, the first impressions of this networking age were apparent in September 1969 under the name of APRANET of Department of Defence of Government of USA. APRANET mostly had four major technological elements, namely: –

  1. Interface message processor
  2. Network Topology
  3. Network matries
  4. Hretitech rural design

These are said to be the predecessors of internet world of today. Development of APRANET was evolved by the hard working of various agencies which included Bernek and Neaman analysis, Corporation University of California at Los Angles (UCLA) etc. This network topology had first public demonstration during a conference in 1972 which was organised under the banner of “The International Computer Communication”. The designer of APRANET Architecture was Bob Kahnm in this conference. By November 2000 the number of connectivity rose rapidly. Around 407.1 million computers were said to be connected by APRANET.

Another major milestone which came in 1982 was when the Defence Department of USA developed TCP and IP protocol for APRANET. This TCP/IP was also used for military work.

Social media websites are no longer performing an envisaged function of creating a positive communication link among friends, family and professionals. It is a veritable battleground, where insults fly from the human quiver, damaging lives, destroying self-esteem and a person’s sense of self-worth.

One more protocol follow up in this regard is that all the connected computers should have same standard format so that the data can be transferred from one system to another in a sequential order with logical connectivity. TCP/IP (Both transfer Internet Protocol) has an universal acceptance now a days. After these developments, another new medium of communication developed which is known as E-mail (Electronic Mail). What internet basically uses is the convergence of computer and communication technology. Communication and data transfer has increased a lot by means of digital revolution. The last thirty years have been a boon in this regard. The major achieved in this regard was the first fibre operation which can handle around 40,000 telephone calls simultaneously in the year 1988. The present data rates of about hundreds of gigabytes per seconds (GCPs) are the credit to fibre links across the surface of the earth. This fibre links are also found in the deep ocean bed of the planet Mother Earth with this advent of fibre links, APRANET was transferred into a public network and opened it to all the citizens. The internet society was chartered in the year 1992. This is considered to be a formal inlet in the revolution of digitalisation. This is assumed to be the official birth of Internet. This infers that the internet is around 25-26 years old. Internet has been a remarkable change as it has paved the way for wide spread application and has provided various utility services to the common man in a society. The major work of internet usage is to develop such capabilities to transfer files and data from one computer to another. This required a wide network of networks that could be connected to any computer in the world among millions and billions of computers. It is just like a web woven by a spider. This wide web in any point is connected to all other points through the means of ports or rings (spokes like structure). Both these can also be used to connect the computer. This internet infrastructure was named as www (World Wide Web). Another kind of change that came with this internet use was the development of Intranet. By Intranet we mean a network which works within an organisation (especially large). This kind of network uses the same protocols as the internet. This intranet has various advantages which include the following: –

  1. Increase in efficiency
  2. Increase in productivity.
  3. Increase in quality of products and services.
  4. Can be used to connect with intranet.
  5. Binds one organisation.

Internet when connected with intranet uses standard protocols. Then it is known as extranet.

Advances in computer technology and the Internet have changed the way America works, learns, and communicates. The Internet has become an integral part of America’s economic, political, and social life.

E-mail – Ray Thomolinson was the first person to send an electronic mail in the world. He was a programmer by profession. The first e-mail which he had sent to himself had the body message. “QWERTUIPO” and was testing 1-2-3. After the development of two years the language of internet evolved. This was done to make e-mail, easier using TCP/IP. Gradually, with time various features were added in email like sending attachment, picture, sound clips etc. with the existence of web browser the utility of e-mail developed in e-commerce age in the decade of 1990s e-mail served various features from message to advertising tool. Furthermore, it can also be used as a medium for active interaction between various groups. Hotmail, it was one of the most well known e-mail portal purchased by Microsoft in January 1998. This deal was done in 4000 dollar million from Sabeer Bhatia with the success of this deal, new free portals like Yahoo etc. cropped up some sites developed which provided the facility of e-mail as a paid service. A lot of changes and innovation added a few important feature like voice mails, SMS, instant messenger service, web enabled services, internet telephone etc.

The use of eomoticoms helps in bringing life to the chat group. TCP/IP introduction in the year 1982 landed in the birth of internet revolution. However, the path of e-mail development can be traced back. In the year 1984 when William Gibson uses ‘the world cyber space’ in his book entitled ‘Newsmancer’ in the year 1991. www was officially created by Tim Berner Lee at CERN Switzerland in the year 1993. Furthermore, first graphical web browser mouse was released to promote net surfing and was made open for public use around 2000. 50 countries were connected by means of internet in the year 1996. It is also observes that more than 4 million e-mails are sent everyday using internet links. Around 7 million view web pages are created everyday. E-mail is attracting a lot of business everyday. Thus, a computer are becoming important everyday and is soon becoming the essential equipment in daily life (both rural and urban areas).

Now the question that arises is, what are the pre-requisites of sending an email? The steps to be followed for sending email are as under: –

  1. Well connected, ready and prompt internet connection.
  2. E-mail software should be installed (various browsers like chrome, Mozilla Firefox, etc.)
  3. Opening e-mail account.
  4. Typing the message in suitable format helping the server to understand and interpret the message.
  5. The message is passed along an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) which scans the mail.
  6. After scanning, the mail is sent to its destination.
  7. From local server, the mail is passed to the recipients.
  8. As the server receives it, the message is then transferred in an internal ways.
  9. POP3 (Point to Point Protocols) are used to connect mail server.
  10. POP3 also helps in downloading and storing all the messages.
