Computer is considered as a revolution in the new millennium. Computer acts as the harbinger of a silent change in the world. Computers were developed to be used as fact and accurate device used for calculation. The earliest known device used for calculation is known as Abacus. This device represents a number by means of position of beads. This device invented around 600 B.C. The first mechanical device of calculation was invented by Blaise Pascal in the year 1642. However, keyboard machines and punching cards came around the year 1880. Business machine paved the way in the end of nineteenth century. Charles Babbage who worked as a professor at University of Cambridge is known as the father of computers or in other words modern digital computer. In the year 1852, he gave the conceptual idea of Analytical Engine. This analytical engine was automatic and could perform basic arithmetic function. The average speed of this analytical engine measure is an average of 60 additions per minute.
The field of computers changed in the decade of 1990- where a new dawn comprising of various software industries comes into era. The major cause of these changes is not only the rate of growth a foreign exchange of the country but also the manpower. By, software we mean ideas and solutions which are coded in computer by trained, qualified and experienced personnel. This leads to a new era leading to the development of modern IT industry. This formal sector has given a boom to various other sectors. This is not confined to a single scope. Various engineering colleges and polytechnic centre have cropped up. These colleges, besides, offering a course of four years like BE/B.Tech/B.Sc. (Engineer) etc. These courses are offered by many colleges and various universities. This course has been started by means of application oriented courses, modular courses, part time courses, fast track course etc. Universities are also offering corporate training by means of which people or students are educated from different streams with various degree holders in the specialised area. In recent times, Government of Tamil Nadu with Sam Pitroda, World Tel and Reliance have jointly collaborated in laying a 3000 km of fibre optic cable. This cable will be helpful in creating a network in Tamil Nadu which will be offering all types of forms, land resources, personal records etc. in the world of digitalisation. If this initiative succeeds then this experiment will be expanded in other states of the country like Gujarat, Karnataka, and West Bengal etc.
In the state of Kerala, all the villagers will be linked online with district headquarters which will help the citizens in comparing development of their village to other villages. In the state of Andhra Pradesh every district headquarters is connected to Hyderabad by means of digitalisation. This digitalisation offers the main pillars of government to remain in contact with district officials in one click. Technology is considered to be one of the chief pillars of growth of a country. This engine of technology shackles the trade barriers and provides opportunities in a better way for the country and people. Therefore, computers are a boon to the mankind.
